Start with Apple Books for a compatible personal EPUB collection. Consider Reader when books need to sit alongside articles and exported research notes. First confirm that you actually have a readable EPUB: a store download or license file is not automatically a portable ebook.

How to read disagreement
Different opinions can reflect different jobs, versions, devices or paid plans. We do not call a few comments “the consensus.” A consequential factual conflict that remains after checking those differences is a candidate for a focused hands-on test. A preference for one interface over another usually is not.

Identify the file you own
Check the extension and the provider’s instructions. A license or fulfillment file may require a specific app. Do not rename a file to .epub and expect conversion. Use a rights-cleared sample for evaluation, especially if the original came from a library or another store.
Test a complete chapter
An opening cover page is not a sufficient compatibility test. Inspect the table of contents, chapter jumps, footnotes, images and text resizing. Try the book in both portrait and landscape on iPad. A fixed-layout title may behave differently from a reflowable novel.
Match the reader to the purpose
For leisure reading, comfortable navigation and a reliable place marker may be enough. For project reading, compare annotations and exported context. Avoid moving a whole library merely to gain a feature that you will use twice; validate one representative book end to end.
Verify the second device
Importing on Mac does not establish the exact iPhone procedure or prove the book is downloaded locally there. Open the book on the intended reading device before travelling. Record the actual import path and offline result so our guide can distinguish documented steps from a completed test.
Limitations & considerations
- Apple Books: Book purchases and regional availability are separate from the free reader app.
- Apple Books: EPUB notes and PDF markup are different workflows. The cited note-loss account is historical and unreplicated; keep an independent copy of critical notes.
- Readwise Reader: Reader is included in Readwise Full, not Lite. The $9.99 monthly equivalent is billed annually.
- Readwise Reader: Cloud account, document format and integration behavior affect the workflow. No universal capture or offline-reliability benchmark is claimed.
