Choose and manage an AI character-chat workflow
Pick the conversation style, continuity controls and setup effort that fit the fictional experience you want.
The short answer
Compare hosted chat with a configurable frontend/backend setup, then distinguish recent context from explicitly saved story memory.
Side by side
| Your situation | Useful route | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing a tool | Read a function-led selection | Task fit and platform |
| A limit decides eligibility | Read the condition-specific guide | Current plan and output boundaries |
| Ready to carry out the task | Follow the relevant tutorial | Inputs, steps and saved result |
Where will the story facts live?
Keep the setting and relationships in an explicit summary or configured context source; keep the current exchange in the chat. A longer transcript is not equivalent to reliable saved memory.
Choose the matching route
- Hosted free saved story context: compare Character.AI Story Memory and pinning.
- SpicyChat tier choice: inspect context, reply ceiling, personas and Memory Manager separately.
- Control of model and context files: use SillyTavern, with a separately chosen backend.
- Remove a remembered fact or close an account: use the memory/privacy guide, not fictional dialogue.
Keep a portable premise
Record the fictional setting, characters, relationships and current objective outside the service. If a reply uses an unwanted fact, inspect the saved summary, persona and active transcript before assuming a new chat alone will remove it.
