Free Space Used by Photos and Videos
Compare smaller copies before deciding which originals to remove.
The short answer
HEVCut is an option when you want smaller copies of existing photos and videos rather than simply discard the memories. Begin with a few representative files, inspect the compressed result, and decide whether its quality is suitable before keeping it. Use a separate backup for originals you may need for editing or preservation.
Inspect a small selection before a large batch
Look at the expected savings and compression settings. Choose a few photos and videos with the detail and motion typical of your library. The provider documents different resolution and format choices; a smaller file is useful only if its result meets your needs.
Compare the result and decide what to keep
Review the original and compressed copy before accepting the replacement. Preserve an independent original when you need full editing latitude. In Photos, removed originals enter Recently Deleted; originals deleted from an external drive do not have that recovery route.
Check the free and paid boundary
Scanning and result review are free, compression has a limited free allowance, and Pro adds unlimited compression and fine controls. Deletion from the duplicate and clutter tools requires Pro. Confirm the current purchase offer before planning a whole-library cleanup.
Limitations & considerations
- Savings vary with the source and settings; the developer’s percentages and screenshot examples are not a guarantee.
- Default video settings can reduce 4K to 1080p. Keep original resolution is a separate toggle; original-resolution photos require Pro Fine-tune.
