Task overview

Transcribe an interview without uploading the recording

Separate local speech recognition from cloud summaries, storage sync and participant consent.

The short answer

For an interview that must stay on your computer, investigate a deliberately local MacWhisper or Buzz workflow. Prepare the model using a harmless sample, store the recording in an appropriate location and check the full run offline before introducing sensitive material. Product marketing is not an independent privacy audit.

Choose by your needs

Which app fits your job?

Turn recordings into reusable transcripts

Shortlist it when you need transcript editing and exports as well as captions. Pick a local model when the intended workflow is on-device.

The tradeoff: Model, hardware and optional cloud features change the tradeoff. A single reviewer’s speed result is not a universal benchmark.

An open-source transcription starting point

Consider it when inspectable software and subtitle export matter more than a commercial transcript workspace.

The tradeoff: Check supported hardware and model setup in the current project documentation.

MacWhisperEditorial update

9to5Mac · Zac Hall

Dec 6, 2024 · MacWhisper 11 / 11.1

Hall welcomes the transcript-view redesign and sidebar, and covers the menu-bar dictation workflow.

Read in context: An older release article partly reproducing the developer’s announcement—not an independent accuracy or speed benchmark.

MacWhisperUser comparison

r/macapps · CtrlAltDelve

MacWhisper 12.2-era · Parakeet vs Whisper · M1 Max

This user prefers Parakeet for quickly turning long spoken notes into readable text, while acknowledging errors in names.

Read in context: One recording and one machine, not our benchmark. The post updates an initially reported crash as fixed; do not repeat it as an unresolved current bug.

BuzzFirst-person workflow

Tom Fichtner

2026 voice-memo transcription article · Windows workflow

Fichtner favors recording a voice memo and then importing the file. He reports missing beginnings or endings with live recording and trouble with recursive folder watching.

Read in context: Not our test and not a Mac result. Check release and recording conditions before treating those reported problems as current universal defects.

How to read disagreement

Different opinions can reflect different jobs, versions, devices or paid plans. We do not call a few comments “the consensus.” A consequential factual conflict that remains after checking those differences is a candidate for a focused hands-on test. A preference for one interface over another usually is not.

Define the privacy requirement

“Private” can mean different things: no third-party transcription service, no cloud backup, restricted access to transcripts or a contractual requirement about retention. Write down the boundary before choosing settings. A local recognizer does not prevent a synced folder from uploading its inputs or exported files.

Use recordings you are entitled to process and make sure participants understand the intended use. For this editorial test, use a staged conversation rather than an actual confidential interview. Do not upload real interview material simply to check an optional summarizer.

Make speech and speakers separate checks

Recognizing words and attributing them to the right person are different tasks. Evaluate names, technical vocabulary and overlapping turns manually. A neatly formatted speaker label can still be wrong; preserve the original recording so every quotation can be traced back to audio.

Review before sharing

Export a plain-text copy and inspect it outside the app. Remove accidental identifying details from any public sample. Record where the app stores projects and whether sync or external AI integrations were enabled. If the destination only needs selected quotations, sharing the full raw transcript may expose unnecessary material.

Our eventual test will compare a clean two-person recording with a noisier excerpt. It will report correction workload and failures, not declare that one app makes all interviews safe or perfectly accurate.

Limitations & considerations

  • MacWhisper: Local models and optional cloud/API integrations are different processing routes; select the route appropriate for the recording.
  • MacWhisper: Free and Pro features differ. Website Pro licensing and the App Store Whisper Transcription edition are separate entitlements.
  • Buzz: Newer Mac builds require Apple Silicon; the project identifies 1.4.5 as the last Intel-compatible release.
  • Buzz: Model/backend choices affect setup and output. The cited live-recording problems are a user’s Windows account, not a reproduced current Mac defect.

Documented features, attributed opinions and explicitly labeled hands-on observations are different kinds of evidence. We do not infer unmeasured performance or privacy guarantees.
