Free Offline Transcription Apps for Mac: Options and Limits

Start with a local-model workflow, account for downloads and hardware, and separate offline recognition from optional network features.

BuzzBuzz
Step-by-step guide

The short answer

Buzz is a free open-source candidate for local transcription on Mac. Download the required model before disconnecting and select a local backend, not a hosted API. Check hardware support: the current installation guide requires Apple silicon and identifies 1.4.5 as the last Intel-compatible release.

What offline actually needs

A local model can process a recording without uploading it for inference, but the app and model must already be installed. Do not discover an incomplete model download after losing internet access.

This article uses the project’s documentation. We have not completed a new disconnected recording run, compared recognition accuracy or audited all network activity.

Start with Buzz and a local backend

Buzz documents import of audio/video and transcript or subtitle export. Its import guide lets you choose the task, language and model settings. For an offline requirement, use a supported local model rather than the OpenAI API route.

Verify the current Mac build requirements before downloading. An old compatible release is not a promise of ongoing support or identical features.

Prepare a small acceptance recording

Use a short recording with clear speech, a name, a number and a quiet section. Download the intended model, then disconnect and attempt the complete import-to-export workflow. Reopen the output and compare the difficult words with the source.

Treat this as a check you should perform on your setup, not as a test already executed by iApp4Me. Record hardware, app version and model name if you compare results later.

Separate transcription from optional network actions

Buzz documents settings for telemetry, update checks, remote APIs and optional transcript uploads. Local inference does not automatically disable those separate features. Review the settings and destinations appropriate to your requirements.

A transcript can still leave the device when you save it into a synced folder or send it to another application. Evaluate those destinations separately from the recognition engine.

When to compare another Mac app

MacWhisper is a relevant alternative when a transcript-review workspace is the main need, but its editions and optional integrations have their own terms. Check the feature you need before calling an entire workflow free.

Do not select a tool from an unqualified speed or accuracy claim. A useful choice depends on your audio language, recording quality, model, hardware and the correction work you are prepared to do.

Limitations & considerations

  • No new offline execution, accuracy or network-audit result is claimed. Capabilities and preparation steps are documented by the provider.
  • Offline speech recognition is different from disabling telemetry, updates, optional plugins and cloud storage.

Documented features, attributed opinions and explicitly labeled hands-on observations are different kinds of evidence. We do not infer unmeasured performance or privacy guarantees.

Sources & scope

Reviewed October 24, 2026. These are provider-published sources; listings and feature access can change. This article uses the linked documentation; any hands-on observations are separately labeled.

  1. Buzz: supported workflows

Local transcription, file import and TXT/SRT/VTT output; remote APIs are separate options.

  2. Buzz: offline model preparation

Models must already be available for offline work; no speed or accuracy benchmark inferred.

  3. Buzz: Mac installation requirements

Current documentation requires Apple silicon; 1.4.5 is identified as the last Intel-compatible release.

  4. Buzz: preferences and optional network features

Documents telemetry, update checks and optional remote transcription/upload settings. Offline inference is not zero network activity.

  5. Buzz: file import

Official import and export settings; confirm current app controls.
