Free Personal AI Agents: Included Tasks, Limits and Paid Upgrades
Separate genuinely free access from paid-plan inclusion, temporary credits and the cost of running your own model.
The short answer
Meta’s Muse launch describes a free entry route with paid upgrades, while Claude Duet’s checked preview is included in paid Pro and Max plans. Local model tools can avoid a hosted subscription for some jobs, but they are not automatically complete personal agents. Choose the free route that can finish your actual task.
Side by side
| Your situation | Useful route | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Free hosted entry | Check Muse’s current allowance | Availability and background limits |
| Already paying for Claude | Check Duet eligibility | Paid inclusion is not a free plan |
| Local document assistance | Ollama or LM Studio workflow | Hardware and separate agent tooling |
There are several different meanings of free
A free download, a free account and an included feature are not interchangeable. A download may lead immediately to a subscription. A free account may include only a small allowance. A feature included in a plan still requires paying for that plan.
Before choosing, write down the full path from input to useful output. If the task is a recurring email brief, free text chat without email access does not satisfy it. If the task is summarizing a local document, you may not need an autonomous agent at all. This keeps the comparison grounded in a finished job rather than a product label.
What the current entry routes mean
Meta’s launch announcement describes Muse as having a free route and paid plans. Confirm the current limits inside the official account before depending on repeated background work. Anthropic’s Duet preview, by contrast, is an included capability of eligible paid plans; it is not a free-tier entitlement.
Avoid comparing either route with a temporary promotional credit as if all three were permanent allowances. Record whether access resets, expires or requires a card. A temporary credit can be useful for a one-off project, but it is a weak foundation for a workflow you expect to run every morning.
Local tools are another route, with a different job
Ollama and LM Studio provide ways to use downloaded models locally. They are useful when the core need is reading or generating text on your own machine. Running a model is only one part of an agent: connecting services, executing actions and scheduling work still require a suitable application or integration.
Budget for memory, storage and your own setup time. Keep cloud model selection and web-connected tools separate from local inference. A free runtime does not make a paid API free, and an installed desktop interface does not prove that every prompt stays on the device.

Look for the limit that will stop your task
For a brief, the decisive limit may be the amount of background work. For research, it may be how many sources or documents can be processed. For recurring automation, it may be scheduling or connector access rather than message count.
Use a small worksheet: required input, required output, frequency, account connection and stopping limit. Fill in unknowns before connecting an essential workflow. If a provider does not publish a precise allowance, say “account-dependent” in your own plan and keep an alternative route. Do not translate an absent limit into unlimited use.
A practical free-first choice
Choose a free hosted entry route when its current allowance covers a small personal job and cloud processing fits your needs. Choose a local model workflow when you can supply the files and do not need unattended actions. Keep using a normal reminder or manual review when automation adds more setup than value.
Upgrade only after naming the restriction you need to remove. More context, a specific connector or an additional recurring job are concrete reasons. “It might become useful” is not a good basis for a continuing subscription, particularly while a new product’s limits and regional rollout are still changing.
