The short answer

Choose PDF Expert for an Apple-focused document workspace with annotation and paid editing. Choose Acrobat Reader for basic reading, commenting and signing within the Adobe ecosystem, with paid mobile tools available separately. Match the exact platform and plan before paying.

Choose by your needs

Which app fits your job?

PDF Expert

iPhone · iPad · macOS

Annotate and manage PDFs on Apple devices

Shortlist it for a document workspace with reading, markup and paid editing capabilities rather than one isolated conversion.

The tradeoff: Check the current plan for your target device; a review of the Mac version does not establish iPad feature access.

Adobe Acrobat Reader

iPhone · iPad · macOS

Read, comment and work within Adobe

Shortlist it when other people already exchange documents through Acrobat, or you need a familiar PDF reader with an upgrade path.

The tradeoff: Reader is not the same product entitlement as Acrobat Pro. Check which editing and conversion actions require payment.

Apple App Store editorial

US listing editorial feature · publication date not supplied

Apple’s editorial feature emphasizes organizing, annotating and editing documents on iPad.

Read in context: Store editorial is distinct from an independent comparative benchmark or a customer review. The endorsement does not establish which features are free.

Adobe Acrobat ReaderComparative review

Macworld · Chris Barylick

May 24, 2022 · Mac Reader versus paid Acrobat editions

The reviewer distinguishes the free Reader from paid Acrobat tools and criticizes the upgrade-oriented experience when basic PDF work is the goal.

Read in context: Desktop and historical context, not a benchmark of the current iOS interface, mobile editing access or current subscription price.

How to read disagreement

Different opinions can reflect different jobs, versions, devices or paid plans. We do not call a few comments “the consensus.” A consequential factual conflict that remains after checking those differences is a candidate for a focused hands-on test. A preference for one interface over another usually is not.

DecisionPDF ExpertAcrobat Reader
Useful starting point Apple-focused PDF workspace Reading, commenting and Adobe workflows
Paid scope Premium editing and conversion Mobile Premium tools; not automatically desktop Pro
License boundary Mac-only one-time offer differs from the annual Apple-device plan Free Reader, mobile and desktop plans differ
Export consideration Editable versus flattened output Check the action and intended recipient

Start with the document work

For ordinary reading, comments and a visible signature, consider the available basic tools before buying a full editing plan. If you need to replace text, convert a file or assemble documents, check that specific paid action rather than buying on the product name.

Keep mobile and Mac licensing separate

PDF Expert’s website lists an annual Apple-device plan and a Mac-only one-time purchase. Acrobat’s free Reader, mobile Premium and desktop Pro are also different entitlements. The dated price cards above identify currency and purchase channel.

Choose the right export

Readdle documents editable and flattened exports. Keep editable data when the recipient needs to change it; use an appropriate flattened copy when that is the intended deliverable. In either app, retain the source and reopen important forms and annotations in a second reader.

Limitations & considerations

  • PDF Expert: The vendor’s one-time €149.99 offer is Mac-only; it does not unlock iPhone/iPad editing. The €84.99 annual website offer covers the Apple-device plan.
  • PDF Expert: Editable and flattened exports serve different purposes. Reopen the output in another reader when forms or annotations matter.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader: Free Reader, mobile Premium and desktop Acrobat Pro are different entitlements.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader: Account-dependent and cloud operations need a separate document-handling review. A visible signature is not certificate-based signing.

Documented features, attributed opinions and explicitly labeled hands-on observations are different kinds of evidence. We do not infer unmeasured performance or privacy guarantees.
