Convert PDF to Markdown, HTML or RTF: Which Output Should You Use?

A PDF Extractor workflow for reusable notes, browser content and formatted text—plus the checks that prevent broken image links and lost structure.

The short answer

Choose Markdown for text-first notes, HTML for content you need to inspect in a browser, and RTF for formatted text exchange. PDF Extractor 1.02 lists all three. Pick the format for the next editing tool, not as a shortcut to an identical copy of a PDF page.

Side by side

OutputUse it whenInspect before keeping
Markdown Your notes or publishing workflow accepts text markup Heading levels, list nesting, links and image references
HTML You need browser-renderable content Rendered reading order, source markup and asset paths
RTF You need a formatted document in a compatible editor Paragraphs, font substitutions and supported formatting

1. Start with the receiving app

Find out which formats your notes app, editor or publishing workflow can import. A file extension alone does not guarantee that every image or formatting feature will survive.

For a brief text note, Markdown may be sufficient. For a document someone will revise in Word, use the separate .docx guide rather than introducing an unnecessary intermediate format.

2. Convert a small representative sample

Open the PDF in version 1.02 or later and select the required conversion output. Use the three-page allowance to inspect a suitable sample before unlocking a full document.

The listing describes previews of formatted documents and source views for Markdown and HTML. Compare the readable preview with the underlying text when it is available: a heading should not merely look larger while losing its logical place in the document.

3. Check the parts that plain text can hide

For Markdown, inspect headings, bullets, links and the reading order around images. For HTML, open the export in a browser and review the source if you plan to reuse it. For RTF, open it in the editor that will actually receive the document.

Do not assume a Markdown or HTML export embeds every image inside one file. Inspect the delivered files and keep any companion assets together. Move or import the result once as a check before treating it as portable.

4. Keep the original and finish in the right tool

Correct recognition and structural errors before importing a large body of notes. Retain the PDF as a reference for facts, quotations and page numbers.

Conversion does not grant permission to republish copyrighted material. Use these outputs for content you are entitled to reuse, and keep attribution where it is required.

Limitations & considerations

  • This coverage follows the version 1.02 listing, not a hands-on conversion benchmark. Earlier image-extraction observations do not establish this version’s Word or OCR quality.
  • Editable output is not a promise of identical pagination, tables, fonts or reading order. Proofread important text and retain the source PDF.
  • Mac support is stated in the current description. Check device-specific system requirements; this article does not establish Intel support, cross-device purchase restoration or automatic file sync.

Documented features, attributed opinions and explicitly labeled hands-on observations are different kinds of evidence. We do not infer unmeasured performance or privacy guarantees.
