How to Extract Text from a Scanned PDF on iPhone

Choose OCR for image-only pages, use built-in recognition where available and check the copied words against the scan.

The short answer

If words cannot be selected because the PDF is a scan, use OCR. Current Preview documentation includes an Embed Text option when exporting PDF; Camera Live Text can help with a short physical passage. Neither extracting embedded pictures nor taking a screenshot by itself creates reliable editable text.

1. Check whether recognition is necessary

Try selecting a word in the PDF and copying it to a plain-text note. If the correct words appear, the page may already have a usable text layer. Copying existing text avoids unnecessary recognition errors.

If selection fails, inspect whether you have an image-only scan, a restricted document or an unsupported viewer. Failure to select is a clue, not a complete diagnosis of the file.

2. For a searchable PDF, use the supported export workflow

Apple’s current Preview-on-iPhone export guide documents Embed Text for PDF output, using OCR to make image content searchable. Open the PDF, use its export action and check the options available on your OS. Retain the original and save a separately named copy.

After export, search and copy a known phrase from the new PDF. This article follows Apple’s documentation; it does not claim a new iApp4Me iPhone export run or support in every older release.

3. For a short passage on paper, consider Live Text

On supported devices and languages, Camera can recognize visible text and offer Copy. This is a convenient route for a short passage you can frame clearly, rather than processing an entire multi-page PDF.

A screenshot-to-recognition workaround introduces a rendered intermediate. It can be adequate for a few words, but it is not evidence of original layout or image preservation.

4. For editable documents, choose the output format

A searchable PDF, plain text and Word document are different deliverables. PDF Extractor 1.02 describes local OCR and editable-document conversion; treat this as provider-described capability until you have checked a representative output.

The site shares a developer with PDF Extractor. Our older image-extraction observations do not establish its current OCR accuracy. Do not use those results to select an OCR winner.

5. Proofread where errors have consequences

Compare names, numbers, dates, punctuation and table columns against the scan. Keep page references if you will quote or summarize the material. Poor lighting, skew, small type and unusual layouts can make recognition harder.

Do not delete the scan because a paragraph appears readable. Keep the original as the reference, and use the recognized copy for searching or editing only after checking the parts you rely on.

Limitations & considerations

  • Documentation-based instructions; a fresh iPhone OCR run and an OCR accuracy benchmark have not been performed.
  • PDF Extractor and iApp4Me share a developer. Its current OCR and conversion claims are attributed to the provider.

Documented features, attributed opinions and explicitly labeled hands-on observations are different kinds of evidence. We do not infer unmeasured performance or privacy guarantees.
